Code Listen

Music for Healing and Dialogue

Code Listen is a civic arts project using the transformative power of creative music and music performance to support healing and dialogue on gun violence, race and law enforcement practices for Boston residents. Led by violinist and composer Shaw Pong Liu who initiated the project in 2016 as an Artist-in-Residence with the City of Boston in collaboration with the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture, the Boston Police Department, and community organizations including the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute Teen Empowerment and the Mattapan Teen Center.

Musical Memorials for the Mother's Day Walk for Peace

It was an incredible honor to collaborate with over 40 families surviving homicide, 37 musicians, Officer Marivelle Crespo (Victims/Witnesses Resources, Homicide Unit) and Greg Mahoney, BPD director of multimedia, to honor and remember loved ones lost to homicide as part of the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute's Mother's Day Walk for Peace. Over 10,000 people walked this year.

Many of the families participating are members of Legacy Lives On, an incredible group of parents, mostly mothers, who have lost a child to homicide.

Bad weather that weekend limited our street presence, but thanks to Tom Johnson, Lisa Lamberti and Mayor Walsh, we were able to hold the memorial inside City Hall, on a Sunday.

We honor and remember these loved ones lost to homicide, and the strength of their families, and grieve the violence that took these beautiful lives. The photos below are offered in tribute to these loved ones.
